The relaxed summer is over

Paul Nunesdea, PhD, CPF • Sep 08, 2022

The prospects for the future are... exactly what you choose them to be.

The day when Queen Elizabeth II dies causes a mix of feelings of love, gratitude, admiration and surprise.

Not that I wasn't expecting this could be happening but precisely for this, having just received the new prime minister a few days ago made it seem quite unexpected, in spite of the circumstances.

Hearing Liz Truss saying "God save the King" in her second speech as prime minister is also surprising. Is this signalling the end of this so familiar Era, magnificently symbolized by QE2? Is this marking the beginning of a new and totally unfamiliar one?

But if I can take a bit of inspiration from her life is that the belief and persistance on a set of strong values (check the World Values Day) can make a profound impact in the world regardless of the power position one has in life.

She had no political power at all in what concerns UK democracy, everybody told me that when I lived in the UK. Yet, she was the living example that her symbolic power can be the most important of all powers, the power to captivate our souls.

With 'symbolic power', whenever facing adversity and even if it is the worst possible kind of adversity, you can always be inspired,  you can always listen inside you, and you will always know what needs to be done next.

Looking back at this summer, I took the extra time to keep contributing with our powerless symbolic platforms(*) to host conversations that mater and shift the direction of change for the better.

What have we done

Throughout this summer, on our associated platform Fórum Hospital do Futuro, we held 'on-the-spot debates' about the crisis in emergency rooms and the new SNS statute: How to overcome the crisis in the Emergency Department | LinkedIn Live (in Portuguese)

And I expressed my opinion on how a focus on Digital Health could mitigate the problems that are still being felt today (in Portuguese): here.

I also moderated a debate on the new status of the SNS: whose conclusions can be followed here (in Portuguese):

What's still to be done

Due to this new window of opportunity to change things in the Portuguese health system (and not just in the SNS), it is important to keep the voice of civil society very active and for that reason I would like to invite you to support our next hybrid event that will be broadcast live from Porto, on the 29th and 30th of September: 5th Meetup & Digital Health Innovation Campus | FMUP

If you think it might be relevant for your company to join this event as a speaker or as a partner, do not hesitate to contact us.

Health Data Forum Global Hybrid Summit

As we start the second semester in 2022 our renewed energy is now focused in the creation of the best event experience ever in what is now becoming recognized as the Davos conference of Health Data and the diversity and quality of our previous event participants testifies that: more.

Since 2020 we have been convening participants under diverse content programs but our goals remain the same: how to combine the different perspectives of data scientists, healthcare professionals, patients and governance to find the much- needed consensus for the next generation of healthcare systems?

To accomplish our goal we have decided to focus this year summit's theme on health data quality.

The aim of this next global hybrid summit in Porto is to demonstrate the importance of quality of healthcare data, how to measure data quality and how to improve it. Whether for primary use or secondary use, data quality is an universal requirement. It is the most important real world data challenges.

Data without quality can neither contribute value nor serve any useful purpose.

Along with my dear PhD colleague Martin Duffy, we didn't stop producing our monthly episodes in the summer and we couldn't possibly regret this decision. We had such wonderful discoveries and shared learning with a variety of guest speakers from across the world. The regret would be not having hosted these great conversations.

Difficult to highlight anyone in particular, I invite you to visit the Healthy Virtual website for past episodes or the Howspace space below.
